Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team started strong but struggled to open the second half in a 44-35 loss at Rifle on Saturday.
The Sailors were down by just four at half, 24-20, before struggling on offense in the third quarter.
“On both sides it was not a pretty quarter,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “There was not a lot of flow. It affected us. We gave up 10 points in that quarter. But the flow and the shots that we did get, we didn’t put in.”
Steamboat (7-8) was again led by Alice Holmquist who scored 10 points including going 3 of 6 from the 3-point line. Nikki Fry kicked in eight.
After struggling through much of the Western Slope League schedule, Steamboat has started to play better.
Even in Saturday’s loss, the Sailors played much better than the first time they played the Bears, a 15-point loss in December.
But Steamboat, with four league games remaining, needs to start turning things on with seeding for the district tournament nears.
The team plays next at 6 p.m. Friday at Palisade.
“We got to come away with that win,” Ameen said. “We were up by 10 last time. Then in the second half we go cold and we don’t execute. That’s what killed us. Friday will be big.”
