Rev. Tim Selby: Methodist church welcomes all

I have read with sadness the recent news of trials occurring within the United Methodist Church.

Most recently, the headlines in many papers, including the Steamboat Today, have focused on the charging, prosecution and defrocking of a UMC pastor who performed the marriage ceremony of his gay son. UMC clergy are currently prohibited from performing same sex marriages, though there is widespread disagreement within the church regarding this issue.

The Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church has issued a “Statement of Gospel Obedience” that emphasizes Christ’s grace and love is available to all and that The United Methodist Church is in error on the subject of “homosexuality’s incompatibility with Christian teaching.”

Delegates of the Western Jurisdiction voted to extend “extravagant hospitality” to all people.

I hope that all people feel welcome at the United Methodist Church of Steamboat Springs. I also yearn for the day that we will make headlines, not for our trials, but for the great work that our churches do make this world a better place for all people.

Tim, you wrote "The Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church has issued a 'Statement of Gospel Obedience' that emphasizes Christ’s grace and love is available to all and that The United Methodist Church is in error on the subject of 'homosexuality’s incompatibility with Christian teaching.'"

Shall we then assume that, in all fairness, the same position of discounting Bible Truth is taken on all other areas of biblically-outlined sinful life-practices? Just curious...

Show grace and love to all, yes...we all must; but attempt to rewrite the Truth of Scripture, never! PC does not trump the God's Truth.

Man's attempts to obscure and ignore uncomfortable and inconvenient Biblical doctrines are almost as old as the Bible itself.

Man realizes new truth's as we "evolve"; or so we tell ourselves.

God has never "realized" anything. Ponder that.. Nothing ever "occurs" to God.

It is true that the Church is supposed to be a "hospital for sinners", not a "country club for saints". Jesus taught that "it is not the healthy, but the sick who need a physician". God loves all men and wants them to come to him.

However, if nothing one does is a sin and nobody is "sick" with any sin then your church is reduced to little more than an inconveniently timed Rotary Club meeting and hence it becomes worthless.

I can't believe I am saying this Mark but I couldn't agree more. I especially like the comment that "the church is supposed to be a hospital for simmers and not a country club for saints." Hopefully we will all find more to agree on in the coming year. Also, thank you Tim for opening your place of worship to all, closed doors and minds work best when they are open. Thanks for sharing!
