Steamboat Springs Friday offered the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team the chance to play under the bright lights of the Pepsi Center in Denver. The experience was anything but magical for the teams, however. The Sailors fell, 57-25, to Glenwood Springs, dropping to 5-2 on the season.
“We had a deer-in-headlights look for most of the game,” Steamboat coach Mack Spitellie said.
He couldn’t point to an exact reason. Surely plenty of credit goes to the Demons, now 6-0 on the season. After that, maybe it was the big stage. Maybe it was a focus on finals or anticipation of the looming holiday break.
Either way, it didn’t leave the Sailors much to work with just a week after a sterling performance in their home tournament.
“It’s a tough one to take anything out of,” Spitellie said. “We just didn’t do anything right. Coming from last weekend where we did so many things right and got better every game, we went backwards tonight.”
