Steamboat Springs Editor's note: Alan Frackowiak spoke during public comment about Golden Leaf's application on behalf of Randy Dean. Dean submitted a letter to the Planning Commission. A previous version of this story incorrectly stated who attended the meeting.
At a Steamboat Springs Planning Commission meeting where two permits for retail marijuana stores were recommended unanimously, the biggest issue seemed to be parking.
Luckily, both Rocky Mountain Remedies’ proposed location in Downhill Drive Plaza and Golden Leaf’s spot on U.S. Highway 40 next to Taco Cabo both had enough spaces to fulfill their requirements.
Only Golden Leaf’s application generated any opposition.
Randy Dean wrote a letter to Planning Commission members stating his opposition to the retail marijuana store.
Andy Frackowiak, speaking on behalf of Dean, said during public comment that he and his property management clients in Riverfront Park were opposed to Golden Leaf's location on U.S. 40.
Frackowiak, who said he voted no on Amendment 64 but did previously support medical marijuana, asked Planning Commission members to “put the brakes on” the application and consider the location’s impact on tourists.
Frackowiak exited the meeting immediately after speaking, but Planning Commission member Kathi Meyer responded to his request.
“This body does not have the authority to say ‘no’ just because we don’t like the businesses,” she said.
Rocky Mountain Remedies co-owner Kevin Fisher, whose application received no public comment, said previously that he expects Colorado residents to keep their medical marijuana licenses and that the higher taxes on retail pot would be a de facto tax on tourists.
Both retail marijuana applications are scheduled to be heard by the Steamboat Springs City Council on Dec. 17 and, if approved, would still have to be heard Jan. 7 by the City Council acting as the Marijuana Licensing Authority before the businesses were cleared to open.
