City of Steamboat launches new interactive map for Nordic ski trails

— With more and more of the city's 21 kilometers of Nordic ski trails expected to open every day this week on Emerald Mountain, community members now have an easier way to find out which trails are open and how recently they were groomed.

The city recently launched a new interactive trails map designed by Mary Schutte, geographic information system coordinator.

The map shows the status of all the trails, and when you click on a trail, more information such as grooming notes are displayed.

"We thought it would instantly benefit the community," Schutte said Monday.

Prior to the release of the online map, residents and visitors either had to call and listen to a recording on a Nordic hotline or find postings on the Nordic Council's website.

As of Monday, there currently were 4 kilometers of Nordic trails open at the Howelsen Hill Nordic Center. The trails rely on natural snow.

The map isn't the only new thing at the Nordic Center this year.

For the first time, snow bikes are being allowed on the trails with a valid pass. They are not allowed from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday because of concern they would conflict with ski training already going on at the hill.

The trails map is the latest example of the city working to get more maps online and accessible to the public.

In recent years, the city has created new local trail maps that are mobile friendly.

The city also has developed an interactive map showing the potential locations where it has considered to build a new police station.
