Yampa Valley Medical Center to host informational sessions on Affordable Care Act

— Yampa Valley Medical Center and the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association will have plenty of health care professionals and insurance brokers on hand this week to help community members navigate the complexities of the Affordable Care Act.

The informational sessions should be especially helpful for people who are shopping for a new health insurance plan that they would like to take effect as soon as Jan. 1.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the hospital and the VNA will host the first of several workshop sessions to help people better understand the insurance enrollment process.

Health insurance navigators and insurance brokers also will be on hand to help answer questions and guide people through the state's health insurance marketplace website called Connect For Health Colorado.

"We're so busy in our offices, and we feel this is a good way for everyone to tackle the same problem," said Erin Gleason, a community and small-business insurance coordinator for the VNA. "Hopefully, this will be a one-stop shop."

Gleason said the informational sessions will be timely because of a health insurance deadline that is fast approaching.

She said that in order for health insurance coverage to take effect by Jan. 1, community members need to enroll in a plan by Dec. 23.

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the hospital will host the first of three open community enrollment sessions.

The enrollment sessions are among many events held in recent weeks that aim to shed light on the impact of health care reform.

Participants are encouraged to bring a computer, and they can receive help from someone to navigate the website.

Attendees wanting to sign up for insurance also should bring Social Security numbers for all household members, their current insurance policy information and a household income estimate for 2014.
