Colorado Hunter advertisers cautioned about scam

Matt Stensland

— The publishers of Colorado Hunter, a hunting guide for Northwest Colorado, are warning advertisers that someone is attempting to fraudulently sell advertising for the magazine.

The annual magazine came out earlier this month. It is published by the Craig Daily Press, Steamboat Pilot & Today and the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel. Advertising is sold by the advertising representatives at those companies.

B&L Quality Taxidermy owner Bob Reinier said he was recently contacted by a man who tried to sell him a full-page advertisement in the magazine for less than half of what he had paid. Reinier said he knew it was a scam because the man claimed the magazine would be published in December.

“I told him outright, “I think you’re scamming me,’” Reinier said.

Reinier said it was obvious the man had seen the ad that Reinier legitimately had paid for in the latest Colorado Hunter.

“He said he was willing to run the same ad,” Reinier said.

Reinier said the man wanted him to provide checking account information to pay for the advertisement.

Reinier wrote down the phone number the man was calling from. The Illinois number is 309-282-4867.

On Tuesday, a man who said his name was James answered the phone at that number. He said he had two advertising spaces available for a publication called Colorado Hunting. Reinier was sure the man he spoke with said he was selling advertising for Colorado Hunter.

James said Colorado Hunting was a new publication that his company, Global Design and Graphics, was distributing. When asked, James said his company website was http://www.global-publishing.net. That website does not exist. James said his company produces community guides and race guides.

When asked, James said about 30,000 magazines would be printed, and they would be distributed at rest stops, area businesses and gun shows.

Several companies that advertise in Colorado Hunter reported receiving similar suspicious phone calls. It was unclear whether anyone provided their financial information.

In response to the phone calls, the Craig Chamber of Commerce sent a warning to its members.

“As always, the Craig Chamber of Commerce urges businesses to evaluate all advertising opportunities carefully, particularly those selling over the phone,” the Chamber stated. “Never give credit card or banking information over the phone, and read all contracts carefully before signing.”
