2013 Steamboat Springs Running Series schedule
Steamboat Springs There was a time when the Continental Divide Trail Run was the preeminent challenge of the Steamboat Springs Running Series, 15 miles of tough trail that scared away even many dedicated local athletes.
But in the age of the 100-mile Run Rabbit Run trail marathon and the 50-kilometer Mount Werner Classic, the Continental Divide seems a little more manageable, and again this year, the race will hit its cap of 120 runners.
The race is set to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday from the Fish Creek Falls parking lot.
“We have our good local runners signed up, and we have good out of town runners,” said Cara Marrs, one of the race’s directors. “It’s going to be a good race with a lot of great runners.”
The route heads up the rocky and steep Fish Creek Falls trail before hanging onto Mountain View trail and eventually coming over the top of Steamboat Ski Area. It ends at the top of the gondola on Mount Werner.
This year’s course will feature one slight alteration adding a little less than a mile to the overall total distance.
“We were nervous because the Steamboat Stinger marathon was the week before. We have the 50K, and there were a ton of big Colorado races last weekend,” Marrs said. “But we still have a lot of the locals who typically come out and a lot of great runners. I’m pretty psyched that we’re on pace with where we have been.”
Registration for the race closed Thursday evening.
Runners can catch a shuttle to the starting line at 7 a.m. from the Knoll Parking Lot at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. They will be able to ride free down the gondola, but anyone wanting to see the finish will have to purchase a ticket to ride up the lift.
