2013 Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series schedule

— Call it separating the children from the adults, call it letting the cream rise to the top, but the Steamboat Springs Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series just calls it the Storm Peak Hill Climb. The Town Challenge is wrapping up its season with two races in back-to-back weeks, beginning with a race Wednesday that heads up Steamboat Ski Area.

“The trail varies depending on the race,” race coordinator David Stephenson said. “Regardless of what class you’re in, you pretty much just go as hard as you can until you finish.”

The race lengths vary from 0.2 miles for riders younger than 6 to the full 7.7-mile track that stretches to the top of Storm Peak for the open division.

“It’s a shorter race than all of our other races,” Stephenson said. “I mean, it’s pretty much a straight, all-out sprint.”

Registration for the Storm Peak Hill Climb is available here, at the Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department before noon Wednesday and from 4:30 p.m. until the race begins at the base of the mountain. (Start times vary from 5:25 to 6:10 p.m.)

The sprint will play a huge role in how the final Town Challenge standings shake out for the estimated 150 participants because this is the last race before the Soul of Emerald XC season finale Aug. 14.

“It’s great because you get to make it as competitive as you want,” Stephenson said. “If people want to see what they can really do in terms of climbing a steep hill in a short amount of time, this is the race.”

Jake Miller, a 2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, is working as a summer intern for the Steamboat Pilot & Today. He recently completed his freshman year at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
