Steamboat Springs For some people, riding a horse is just not enough.
On Friday and Saturday, the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series will play host to the Rodeo Girls Trick Riders, who ride under the horse and on the side of the horse in addition to on top of the horse.
"It’s really a great opportunity for fans to come out and see some of the best rodeo athletes in the business,” rodeo board member Laura Sankey said.
The Trick Riders is a team of three women — Madison MacDonald, Rae Lynne Armstrong and Roz Beaton — who have been touring the nation with their equestrian stunts for 11 years.
“Because we’ve worked together for so long, we know how to read each other, and that lets us put on a great show,” Beaton said.
MacDonald and Armstrong have performed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas the past two years, and Beaton has been part of Cirque du Soleil’s “Cavalia.” Together, they will put on a show Friday and Saturday at Brent Romick Rodeo Arena. Things get started at 7:30 p.m. both days.
“It will be fast paced, exciting and dangerous,” Beaton said. “It’s acrobatics on horseback.”
Sankey said the rodeo board is excited about the Trick Riders and is sure it will make this weekend’s rodeos something to remember.
“They’re just another example of us being able to provide quality entertainment to our fans,” Sankey said.
Also this weekend, Brittany Pozzi, who is ranked fourth in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Series and is one of the top barrel racers in the nation, will compete at Saturday’s rodeo.
Jake Miller, a 2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, is working as a summer intern for the Steamboat Pilot & Today. He recently completed his freshman year at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
