Local dancer to attend The Ailey School Summer Intensive Program
Steamboat Springs High School junior and dancer Maggie McElhiney will travel to New York City this summer to participate in the prestigious Summer Intensive Program at The Ailey School.
Founded by choreographer Alvin Ailey, The Ailey School’s six-week summer program is an opportunity for dancers ages 16 to 25 to train in ballet and modern techniques with renowned choreographers.
McElhiney, who dances at Elevation Dance Studio in Steamboat Springs, has been working on her audition tape an extra three to four hours per week on top of her regular classes and preparing for the Sugar Plum Fairy role she played in the Nutcracker this year, studio owner Renee Fleischer said.
McElhiney, a former gymnast, also was accepted to the Joffrey Ballet Schools’ summer program and is the first Elevation dancer to attend The Ailey School.
