Steamboat Springs The president of the U.S. Travel Association is expected to remind his audience in Steamboat Springs on Oct. 11 that the travel industry in the U.S. supports 14.4 million jobs that cannot be outsourced.
Roger Dow, president and CEO of the Travel Association, will give an address in the midst of the Colorado Governor’s Tourism Conference taking place at The Steamboat Grand from Oct. 10 to 12. Tourism leaders from across the state will convene in Steamboat to hear presentations from representatives of the Colorado Tourism Office about current marketing plans to reach deeper into growing international markets. Other speakers will be giving practical advice to people in the industry about how to make the most effective use of computer analytical tools to sift through available data.
Dow can be expected to draw from the Travel Association's new report, “Travel Means Jobs,” released at the end of August.
He is no stranger to Steamboat. He owns a home here and spoke during Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.’s annual airline summit in January 2008.
During that speech, he told an audience of executives and managers from airlines serving Yampa Valley Regional Airport that the U.S. was missing out on the potential for increased international tourism represented by a weakened U.S. dollar.
He called for relief from some of the hassles involved in international tourism to the U.S., including delays in obtaining visas. Although there are 27 countries where travelers do not need a visa to visit the U.S., it’s a different story in other countries, he said in 2008.
Dow told his Steamboat audience about a business lunch with a Shell Oil executive who said his company does not host meetings in the U.S. because too many of its foreign executives must wait to obtain visas.
