Steamboat briefs: Rio Grande will close from Oct. 1 to 3 for renovations

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant will close from Oct. 1 to 3 for renovations, according to a news release.

When the restaurant reopens Oct. 4, it will welcome new General Manager Wes Boyd and new Kitchen Manager Jon Demel. Boyd comes to Steamboat from Fort Collins, where he had led restaurants for more than nine years. He has more than 18 years of restaurant experience and holds a Masters of Business Administration from Colorado State University, according to the release. Demel is culinary trained and has more than a decade of experience in leading kitchens in Steamboat and on the Front Range. His background includes experience as executive chef at Sheraton Steamboat Resort and Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in Englewood, according to the release.

Former General Manager Carmen Welch will remain as part of Rio’s Steamboat leadership team, according to the release.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Sept. 29

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Steamboat Springs Police Department, 840 Yampa Ave. Items that will be collected include over-the-counter and prescription medication. Items that cannot be accepted include needles and sharps, mercury (thermometers), oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters and illicit drugs. The program is sponsored by the city of Steamboat Springs police services, Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide. Part of Forest trail closed during rehabilitation work

A section of Forest Trail 1101 near Dumont Lake in Routt National Forest will be closed during rehabilitation work on the Four Counties Ditch, according to a news release. The trail will be closed from Dumont Lake to Base Camp Road (Forest Road 311) through the fall as well as part of next year for wetlands rehabilitation work, according to the release. Multiple projects are taking place in the area, including repairs to the Muddy Creek dam on Dumont Lake. The Dumont Lake day-use area and picnic site are closed while the dam is being repaired. For more information, call the Hahn’s Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District at 970-870-2299 or go to www.fs.usda.gov/mbr.

Registration is open for the Parks preschool fall program

Registration is open for the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department’s preschool fall program. The program is for 3- to 5-year-old children who are potty trained. A $160 mini-chef session runs Tuesdays for 12 weeks, and a $190 skating session runs Thursdays for 11 weeks. The program begins Tuesday, and participants can register for the entire session at a discounted rate or for individual days. Programs are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Igloo at Howelsen Hill.
