Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team got back in the win column Thursday after downing Durango, 5-2, in Grand Junction.
Steamboat, which opened the season with four top-tier opponents, improved to 2-4 on the season.
“We definitely needed this,” Steamboat coach Don Toy said.
Steamboat got wins at No. 2 singles from Gabri Erspamer and No. 3 singles from Stefan Sortland.
The No. 1 doubles team of Corbin Diehl and Ben Wharton, the No. 2 doubles team of Quinn Cain and Nick Mathews and No. 3 doubles team of Zach Dunklin and Joe Borgerding also won.
“We’re getting better at being competitive,” Toy said. “That’s our whole goal.”
The team continues play at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Western Slope Open in Grand Junction. The tournament draws the top teams and players from across the state.
“This will help us in the long run,” Toy said. “The kids did well” Thursday.
