Fire nearly destroys logging equipment in North Routt County

— A half-million dollar piece of logging equipment nearly was destroyed after catching fire early Wednesday.

A worker camping at the Hahn’s Peak Lake Campground discovered the Timco tree cutter on fire shortly before 5 a.m., and North Routt Fire Protection District firefighters responded. Chief Bob Reilley said the fire destroyed the cab and engine area of the equipment but the cutting mechanism was saved. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the forest.

Reilley estimated the damage at $300,000. He said that there was nothing suspicious about the fire and that it is thought the fire started because of an electrical problem.

Reilley said the equipment belonged to Kremmling-based HDR Logging. The company is doing a logging project for the U.S. Forest Service.
