Members of the group It Takes Courage, a community outreach team dedicated to raising awareness about bullying and preventing suicides, are traveling to Florida in November to speak at an Erase Hate Tampa Bay event.
It Takes Courage founder Heather Savalox, of Routt County, will share the story of her 15-year-old niece, Kristina Calco, who committed suicide after being bullied for years.
“They want real stories from real people who have been bullied or experienced the tragedy of bullying to share with their crowd, to drive the message home that we all have the capability to stand up and make a difference against these kind of hateful behaviors,” Savalox wrote in an email about the Erase Hate event.
Savalox is seeking donations to help cover travel expenses. Donations can be made to the It Takes Courage account at Wells Fargo. For more information, call Savalox at 970-430-1325.
Annual coat drive seeks to help community members
The annual community Coat Drive is Friday through Sunday in Steamboat Springs. LIFT-UP of Routt County, Ski Town Cleaners and Colorado Group Realty are sponsoring the drive, which asks residents to donate warm winter coats for adults and children. After cleaning, the coats will be distributed beginning later this month to members of the community via LIFT-Up’s food bank.
Coats can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the Ace at the Curve parking lot; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart parking lot; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the parking lot at Third Street and Lincoln Avenue adjacent to Rabbit Ears Motel. Coat drive organizers say there is a particular need for children’s coat this year, and they ask that residents not drop off light jackets. For more information, call 970-870-0727 or visit www.lift
