2012 Sailors volleyball schedule

— The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team lost Friday night, falling in three sets on the road against Palisade. The Sailors lost, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23.

“They’re tough. We definitely had to play our best to have a shot at beating them, and we didn’t do that,” coach Wendy Hall said. “We fought hard, played hard and had some good defensive plays in the backcourt. The block needed to help us a little more than it did, though.”

Hall said Palisade hit the ball well but that Steamboat’s own hitting was as big a problem as anything else. The team finished with 22 kills but also with 22 errors.

“That was the big knife to the gut,” she said. “Our error percentage was way too high. We’re not going to be a good team with that kind of hitting percentage. If we’re not going to find the floor very often, we at least need to keep it in play. We have to clean that up.”

Steamboat is right back in action, playing Saturday against Delta and Rifle. Friday’s loss dropped it to 7-9 on the season. With five games remaining, Hall said it’s time the Sailors dig deep.

“I told them in the locker room they have to get so tired of losing that it affects the way they play,” Hall said. “They have to play with some sort of deep, incredible fight, and they have to do it from point No. 1. They can’t be OK with continuing to be defeated. If they can really fight, we’ll start to see more wins.”
