Steamboat Springs The Hayden High School football team's game with South Park on Saturday has been canceled.
Tigers coach Shawn Baumgartner confirmed Thursday morning that the game was canceled because the Burros didn’t have enough players due to injuries and eligibility issues.
The game originally was scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday in South Park.
“Definitely would have been nice to have that game after last week,” Baumgartner said. “But we have some kids injured and sick and this will get us a chance to heal and focus on Vail Christian.”
Hayden is coming off a 32-28 loss to West Grand.
Baumgartner said Hayden first got word from South Park on Monday that the team might have to cancel the game. On Wednesday an official note was sent to Hayden and the Colorado High School Activities Association.
The official result will go down as a 1-0 Hayden win.
Baumgartner said he will now go and watch the Vail Christian and West Grand game Friday night and give his players a long weekend off.
“We’ll relax Saturday and spend time with family,” he said. “Monday we’ll regroup. We’ve got a big game with Vail Christian.”
The Oct. 19 game at Vail Christian will likely decide second place in the league as well as which school hosts an opening-round playoff game.
