Steamboat briefs: First Friday Artwalk will feature decorated hat boxes


Hat boxes decorated by local interior designers will be featured during First Friday Artwalk. The hat boxes will be available for purchase during Emerald Mountain School’s silent auction fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Rex’s American Bar & Grill. Tickets are $50 and are available at the school, 818 Oak St., or by calling 970-879-8081. Call the school to place a bid on a hat box if you are unable to attend the auction. Proceeds from the most successful hat box will go to LIFT-UP of Routt County.

Trousil completes a 77-day expedition in New Zealand

Jay Trousil, 20, of Steamboat Springs, recently completed a 77-day expedition in New Zealand with the National Outdoor Leadership School, according to a news release.  

Part of the semester covered backcountry camping and traveling skills. Students learned topics from campsite selection and cooking to map reading and first aid. The course also covered sea kayaking and sailing as well as New Zealand’s cultural and natural history. Trousil graduated from the NOLS course prepared to lead an expedition of his own, according to the release.
