Steamboat sales tax collections see modest gain in August

Steamboat Springs — Sales tax collections in Steamboat Springs saw a modest gain in August, according to a preliminary report released Monday afternoon by the city.
The city collected $1,440,192 in August compared with $1,411,001 in August 2011, a 2.07 percent increase, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year increases and the seventh month this year (March was down about 1 percent). Year-to-date collections are up more than 2 percent.
By category, miscellaneous retail, lodging and amenities, utilities and liquor stores saw increases of less than 5 percent. Sporting good and restaurants saw decreases of less than 1 percent.
By area, the mountain saw collections increase more than 8 percent, with the U.S. 40 corridor and regional areas also seeing increases. Downtown and west Steamboat collections were down.
In other tax categories, building-use tax collections again saw the largest year-over-year increase at 32.6 percent, but they remain 36.6 percent below last year's collections through August.
The accommodations tax collections were up nearly 5 percent in August and are flat year-to-date compared with 2011.
The air service tax collected $89,613 in August, putting year-to-date collections at $691,357.
