Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls team jumped out to a big lead Friday against Roaring Fork and did just enough to hold onto a season-opening win, 41-36.
Steamboat led by 11 at half and 13 after three quarters before Roaring Fork started to chip away.
Steamboat’s lead was cut to 38-36 with less than a minute left, but McKenzie Repollo hit two free throws to seal the win.
“We were just not doing things well offensively and defensively as consistent as we were in the first half,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We started breaking down, but we gritted it out.”
Repollo and Mikaila Jegtvig led the Sailors with 16 points apiece.
Steamboat was without four starters for various reasons. Ameen said part of the problem down the stretch was fatigue. He said he is excited to see what could happen when he gets a full roster.
“We’re going to be full go and be where the fatigue and mental fatigue doesn’t set in,” he said.
The team next plays at 2 p.m. Saturday at Basalt.
