Former Steamboat Springs resident and Petty Officer 3rd Class Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 3 Aaron Arellano, who is stationed with the U.S. Navy aboard aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, returned Aug. 7 to his new homeport in Norfolk, Va., after an eight-month deployment. He was greeted by his wife, Stephanie Arellano, of Apollo Beach, Fla.; his parents, Cris and Donna Arellano, of Greeley; his brother, Jared Arellano, of Columbus, Ohio; in-laws Dwight and Peggi Murphy, of Saint Augustine, Fla.; and friends Matt and Bridgette Johnston, of Urbana, Va., all former Steamboat residents.
Arellano left homeport Everett, Wash., on Dec. 7, 2011, for deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as the flagship for Carrier Strike Group 9. The deployment was to support the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet Area of Responsibilities. While on deployment, they conducted maritime security operations in the Strait of Hormuz and responded to a distressed Iranian fishing boat. He visited ports in Thailand, Bahrain, Dubai and Turkey. They flew combat flight operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to promote security and stability in the region and to support troops and forces on the ground in Afghanistan. They transited the Suez Canal, then conducted a full range of maritime and theater security cooperation efforts with coalition and other partners to improve safety and security upon the seas.
