The Steamboat Ski Area has been ranked the sixth best ski resort in North America by Outside magazine, and it was ranked the 12th best ski resort in North America by Conde Nast Traveler.
Steamboat moved up four spots over 2011 in the Outside magazine ranking, which evaluates ski areas on snow conditions, terrain quality, amenities, affordability, safety, service levels, lodging options, off-hill recreational activities and apres-ski activities, according to a news release from Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.
This year marks the seventh straight year Steamboat has been part of Conde Nast Traveler’s top 20 resorts in North America, according to Ski Corp. The rankings are determined by the magazine’s readers.
“It’s always an honor when Steamboat is selected as one of the top winter destinations in North America,” Ski Corp. President and COO Chris Diamond said in the release.
Skate-a-thon is Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena
The Yampa Valley Autism Program’s annual Skate-a-thon is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena. The “kids helping kids” fundraiser has participants collect pledges for the number of laps they can skate around the ice rink. Kids also can pledge a flat fee. Prizes are given for most laps skated and most money raised within each age group.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Yampa Valley Autism Program and the programming it provides to local kids and families dealing with autism and related disorders. Those programs include family support services, respite care, social cognition training and group therapy. Yampa Valley Autism Program currently serves 60 families.
There will be refreshments, music and a halftime contest. Participants can take their own skates or borrow a pair from the ice arena. Call 970-870-4263 to pick up a pledge packet, or stop by the ice arena.
