South Routt School Board earns state honor

— When a panel of six judges from across the state met this year to select an outstanding school board to recognize at the Colorado Association of School Boards’ state convention later this month, South Routt quickly rose to the top of the list.

“Basically, what we were looking for is exemplary leadership, not only within the school district but also within the community. That’s what we saw in South Routt,” said Ann Fattor, a former CASB president and one of the judges who helped decide to name the South Routt School Board as CASB’s All State School Board for 2012.

South Routt edged out about 17 other boards across Colorado that had been nominated for the honor.

Superintendent Scott Mader on Tuesday congratulated his board members for the accomplishment, which comes with a $2,500 prize they can spend on any educational purpose.

“They’re not just a good school board, they’re a great school board,” Mader said. “In all aspects, they care deeply about the school district and have a real passion for what’s going on at our schools.”

Fattor said South Routt became an early favorite for the award in part because of some of its recent accomplishments that include collaborating with the Steamboat Springs School District to provide a wider range of technology services to its schools.

The board also recently has helped launch a new endowment fund that aims to raise millions of dollars to support the district in the future.

“We’re really excited we got this,” South Routt School Board President Tim Corrigan said. “It’s not so much for recognizing the work the board has done but recognizing the work of all the students and staff in the district.”

In addition to Corrigan, the South Routt School Board is made up by Vice President Joel Harris, Treasurer John McCollum, Secretary Gina Hange and members Jules Palyo, Jamie Hoff and Brett Mason.

The board plans to celebrate the honor at its regular board meeting Thursday night, and it will be recognized at the CASB convention Nov. 30 in Colorado Springs.
