Monday is World Pneumonia Day, and the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is urging at-risk children and adults to get pneumonia and flu vaccines.
People considered at high risk for pneumonia include the elderly (65 and older), young children whose immune systems are not yet fully developed, and those with underlying health problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The pneumonia vaccine is available at all VNA drop-in flu clinics or by appointment at the VNA offices in Steamboat Springs and Craig. Call 970-879-1632 in Steamboat Springs or 970-824-8233 in Craig.

AARP driving class set for Nov. 26
Senior citizens who want to become safer behind the steering wheel of their vehicle and save on insurance rates can take a special driving course from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 26 in the American Legion room at the Steamboat Springs Community Center.
The fee for the four-hour course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. The AARP is offering the class for free to military veterans and their dependents who register online this month, according to local organizer Bud Romberg.
The class teaches strategies for dealing with age-related changes and has shown over a period of years a statistically valid reduction in the numbers of crashes and injuries among those who have taken the class, Romberg said.
State law requires insurance companies to extend discounted rates for a period of three years to drivers who have taken the class.
For more information or to sign up, call Bud or Jane Romberg at 970-879-0064.
