Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Soccer Club boys team won the 2012 Men’s U18/17 Gold Division of the Real Colorado Cup during the weekend.
The team, made up mostly of current high school players as well as some recent graduates, went 2-1 in pool play. It lost, 2-1, to Real Colorado Red before beating Colorado Rush Adv 1, 7-0, and the Colorado Storm Academy Football Club White, 2-1.
With six points in pool play, Steamboat was the last seed to make it to the semifinals.
“After three games of group play, I felt we played decent but could have beat those teams,” said Hobey Early, the technical director of the Steamboat Soccer Club. “But as a group, we grew from that.”
In the semifinals, Steamboat played Milan SC Black, a team from Southern California.
Steamboat won, 2-1, and advanced to the finals against Albuquerque United Football Club.
Albuquerque controlled play for the first 15 minutes in taking a 1-0 lead.
“They played really quality soccer,” Early said. “It was possession oriented, and the boys were able to tactically make some adjustments.”
Steamboat tied it at 1 before Albuquerque scored again. Minutes later, Steamboat’s Mac Noel took a cross and volleyed in the equalizer. Enrique Lopez then scored the game winner.
The team next plays in the Rocky Mountain Cup in Boulder from June 15 to 17. In addition to the Steamboat players, multiple players from Moffat County will join the team. Steamboat won the tournament two years ago.
Steamboat also fielded a U16 team at the Real Colorado Cup tournament. That team struggled, going 0-4 in pool play.
