3 Routt County nonprofits receive $11,300 in grants

Yampa River Botanic Park, Community Cultivation and Horizons Specialized Services received $11,300 in grants from the Colorado Garden Show, according to a news release.

Yampa River Botanic Park will use the $3,800 in grant money to “renovate a very tired section in the Corner Garden,” Yampa River Botanic Park board President Emily Seaver was quoted as saying in the release. The park has 5 acres, more than 40 gardens and 500 trees. The new area of the Corner Garden will feature lilies.

Community Cultivation, a program of Yampa Valley Autism Program, will allocate its $5,000 grant award to the purchase of a year-round greenhouse. The greenhouse will allow children to learn techniques such as starting seeds, companion planting, balancing the environment to control pests and harvesting produce to sell at the local farmers market.

“Because our growing season is so short, the greenhouse will enable us to extend our programming into the fall and allow for more clients as they learn the skills transitioning from school to work,” Community Cultivation Executive Director Lu Etta Loeber was quoted as saying.

Horizons Specialized Services will use its $2,500 in grant funding to assist with the cost of xeriscaping the front yard at one of the organization’s group homes for adults with developmental disabilities.

“The xeriscape project will allow us to reduce ongoing maintenance fees, conserve natural resources and invest in our neighborhood,” Resource Development Coordinator Deirdre Pepin was quoted as saying.

Since the 1970s, the Colorado Garden Show has awarded more than $5 million to Colorado organizations for horticultural projects and scholarships.
