The early registration deadline for the 15th annual Ski Town USA Golf Classic is less than two weeks away.

Billed as Steamboat’s premier golf event, the classic begins with a registration party June 14 hosted by presenting sponsor Alpine Bank. The tournament, featuring four-man teams, will be played June 15 and 16 on two courses, Catamount Ranch & Club and Haymaker Golf Course.

Entry fee is $360 per individual or $1,350 for a four-man team if paid by June 1. The fee increases to $375 per individual or $1,500 per foursome after June 1. The field is limited to the first 216 golfers.

The entry fee includes the registration party at Alpine Bank and drinks provided by Central Park Liquor, Miller Coors and Coca Cola High Country. Golfers also get two days of golf, two tickets to the benefit auction June 15 and the awards party immediately following the tournament.

Each golfer also receives a $125 gift certificate to the Callaway Golf sales tent. The sales tent will be on-site June 14 at Alpine Bank and also June 15 at Haymaker Golf Course. The tent will include a wide selection of products including golf balls, wedges, gloves, Odyssey putters, sunglasses, readers, shirts, shorts, outerwear, socks, shoes, towels, hats, rangefinders, hybrids, golf bags and more.

“We’re excited to have Callaway Golf on board this year as our golf merchandise sponsor,” said Jim Swiggart, co-chairman of the golf committee for the Ski Town Classic. “Callaway is excited to be a part this event, and we think they will add to the prestige of playing in the classic.”

The tournament is a four-man modified scramble. The field is flighted by handicap and a ladies flight is anticipated this year. The team of Buddy King, Randy Nelson, Steve Dodson and Butch Boucher has won the tournament the past two years.

The tournament is a fundraiser for Steamboat Springs’ two Rotary clubs and the Routt County United Way. The event has raised more than $1 million since its inception 15 years ago, and more than $120,000 in the past two years. All of the proceeds from the past two years have gone to local nonprofit agencies and charities in the form of Rotary and United Way grants.

The benefit auction from 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 15 at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort raises most of the funds. In addition to food and drink, the auction features more than 100 items, including vacation packages to Hawaii, London and Mexico; tickets for major sporting events such as the Indianapolis 500 and the PGA Championship; and two ski passes.

This year, participants will be able to view and bid on auction items online in advance of the event. The auction website is expected to be available later this week at www.skitownclassic.com/auction.

Participants don’t have to play golf to enjoy the benefit auction. Tickets are available for $60 per person and may be purchased at the Steamboat Pilot & Today or by calling the Routt County United Way at 970-879-5605.

In addition to Alpine Bank, major sponsors of the 2012 event include Central Park Liquor, Sheraton Steamboat Resort, KBCR Radio, B&K Distributing, Miller Coors and Central Park Liquor. Wells Fargo Bank is the ball sponsor for the tournament, while Coca-Cola High Country provides beverages throughout the tournament and benefit auction.

Businesses interested in tournament entries, sponsorship opportunities or auction donations should call event chairman Scott Stanford at 970-871-4202.

“This is the major fundraiser of the year for the community’s two Rotary clubs, and all of the money raised gets funneled back into the community,” Stanford said. “And we are hoping that this year’s event helps the Routt County United Way top its 2012 fundraising goal of $510,000.”
