We live in an area with an extraordinary number of choices of things to do, particularly when it comes to recreational activities. Most of us have hiked, biked, floated, boated, skied or boarded. And even more people have watched Olympians ski, jump and ride. We enjoy a wide variety of live music and the arts. We even have a local rodeo. But how often do we get to have firsthand experiences with agriculture? We see the beautiful open spaces, rolling fields of hay, cattle and horses, but we don’t often get a chance to connect with agriculture. Next month offers an opportunity to do just that.
In its seventh year, the Cayuse Classic Barnyard Bash is the signature fundraising event for the Community Agriculture Alliance. This year’s event is focused on creating experiences and connections with agriculture. The day begins with a variety of horse events, including hunter jumper competitions and Western show. Community participants can bring their own horses and tack for friendly competition. Riding events include a Poker Run trail ride and the hilarious Outfitters Race. Spectators are welcome to view the horsemanship and learn more about riding competitions.
New this year is an afternoon full of family-friendly activities and games. We’ll have farm animals to meet and learn about, good old-fashioned fun with sack and egg races and horse and wagon rides. You can even try your hand at roping or drive a Ranger on the obstacle course. There will be a variety of displays and booths, a trivia contest and face painting. There truly is something for everyone.
Later in the afternoon, guests are welcome to come inside the beautiful Sidney Peak Ranch riding arena for more games and fun. Ticketed games include Brando (our local version of bingo), spin the wheel, horseshoe pitching, darts, poker, roll the dice, boot toss and a wine walk. There will be free games and activities for the kids, allowing everyone to have a great time. A casual picnic supper leads into prize drawings, poster contest winner announcements and a live auction. The poster contest is new this year and open to Routt County third-graders. The theme is “How agriculture matters in Routt County.”
More than the typical fundraising event, the Cayuse Classic Barnyard Bash is a true celebration of agriculture. Mark your calendar for June 9 at Sidney Peak Ranch for a great time and the chance to add agriculture to your list of local favorite things to do.
