Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team didn’t need another “we were close” story, not after a season when they’ve repeatedly fallen just short. Unfortunately for the Sailors, they added yet another “almost” to their season, falling 7-5 at Eagle Valley on Thursday afternoon.
“Our biggest problem all season, and it continues to be, is transition,” Steamboat coach Betsy Frick said. “When we get an interception on defense, we have trouble getting the ball up for an attack.”
Steamboat scored first and its defense held strong for much of the first half as the score remained 1-0. Eagle Valley poured it on as time ticked by, though, eventually taking a 5-3 lead into halftime. The Sailors couldn’t make up the difference as the teams played even, 2-2, in the second half.
Aleigh Aurin scored four of Steamboat’s goals and Hannah Hartley threw in the fifth. Sara Pugh and Sam Trahan, meanwhile, split goalie duties, recording six and 11 saves respectively.
“We played well on defense and we played well on offense. The rest comes with experience, more accurate passes, better catches, knowing where to cut,” Frick said.
Steamboat, 0-13, closes out its season Saturday at Aspen.
