— In the company of music, hors d’oeuvres and many friends, retiring Yampa Valley Medical Center CEO Karl Gills will be honored Thursday night for the 11 years he has spent leading the Routt County hospital.

“This is simply a community reception and a chance for everyone to say farewell and good show,” said Christine McKelvie, the hospital’s director of communications. “Karl has served in leadership positions with the Chamber and Routt County United Way, and he has been a Rotarian, so he is very connected to the community. We wanted to give him a nice farewell party.”

The public is invited to attend the celebration at The Steamboat Grand for the man McKelvie said long has been an important part of the fabric of the hospital and the community.

“We think it’s been an awfully good show on his part,” McKelvie said. “We’ll be honoring the connections with the community that he has established in his 11-plus years here as a leader for the hospital.”

Gills will be replaced by Frank May, the hospital’s chief operating officer. May has worked at the hospital since 1998.

May predicted on Wednesday that many community members will be on hand Thursday night to celebrate Gill’s retirement.

“It’s just a time to celebrate Karl and the things he has done here and for everyone to come and have a good time,” May said. “Karl has been an excellent mentor for me, and I’ve enjoyed the 11-plus years we’ve worked together.”
