Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team put a singles player and two doubles teams into the semifinals of the Western Slope Open in Grand Junction.
Steamboat’s No. 1 singles player Christi Valicenti continued her torrid start to the season by advancing to today’s semifinals.
Valicenti had little trouble Friday, rolling through the first two rounds in straight sets.
“She’s playing extremely solid tennis,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “We’re pleased with her whole attitude on the court. She beat two solid players.”
Also advancing to the semifinals were the No. 1 doubles team of Alli Lowrie and Ali Diehl, and the No. 2 doubles team of Shealie Jenkins and Kira Lorenzen.
The No. 2 doubles team won in straight sets, and the No. 1 doubles team won its last match in a third-set tiebreaker.
“It was one of the better matches I’ve seen,” Steamboat coach Don Toy said. “That’s probably the best I’ve seen them play.”
Playing for fifth place today will be No. 3 singles player Ellie Bender and the No. 3 doubles team of Summer Smalley and Brooke Metzler.
The Sailors No. 2 singles player Rachel Grubbs and the No. 4 doubles team of Katie Spencer and Malia Fraioli are in eighth-place matches.
The tournament resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.
