The Fruita Monument girls lacrosse proved to have a little more depth, to be a little faster and be a little more aggressive, and on Thursday, that added up to a win against Steamboat Springs.
The Sailors fell in Grand Junction, 12-5.
“It was a step up in terms of difficult,” Steamboat coach Betsy Frick said.
Aleigh Aurin scored three goals for Steamboat while Nastassija Voyich and Jessie Wallace each had one goal and Hannah Hartley one assist.
The Sailors trailed 8-4 at halftime. Frick said a determined second half could have resulted in a very close final score. The Sailors lost ground as the game wore on, however, and Fruita Monument pulled away.
“We need a little better fitness and a little better catching and throwing,” Frick said. ‘We need to know a little better when to cut and where to pick people up. They had a few people come right down the center that our defensive players missed.
“That will all come with experience. Overall, I was very pleased.”
Steamboat returns to action Wednesday, when it plays host to Eagle Valley for its second home game of the season.
