Steamboat briefs: Shannon Lukens honored for snowsports journalism

Steamboat Springs freelance journalist Shannon Lukens recently received the Harold S. Hirsch Award honorable mention in the blog category by the North American Snowsports Journalists Association, according to a press release.

Lukens won the award for her story “Moose are on the Loose in Steamboat,” which can be found at www.onthesnow.com/news/a/14404.

The Harold S. Hirsch Award, named after the founder of White Stag skiwear, and sponsored by K2 Skis and Sport Obermeyer, honors the best in craft in snowsports journalism in five categories, including blogs, columns, features, photography and videos, according to the release.

Lukens is a three-time award-winning ski columnist for www.onthesnow.com, where she has worked for 14 years.

Previously, she worked for KSPN/TV2 in Aspen, as well as CNN Headline News, Airport Network and WSB in Atlanta, according to the release. She also is the marketing director for Old Town Hot Springs.

Kindergarten registration in Steamboat ends Friday

Kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year is from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Soda Creek and Strawberry Park elementary schools. Bring your child’s birth certificate or passport; immunization records; proof of residence in the form of a utility bill, property tax receipt or lease agreement; and a current photo of your child. A deposit of $200 is required for the full-day kindergarten program.

Donation account set up for victims of house fire

A donation account has been set up for the Peterson family at the Wells Fargo bank in downtown Steamboat Springs. The home that brothers Corey and Jayce Peterson rented on Conestoga Circle burned down early Wednesday. No people were injured in the fire, but a dog died.
