Vail comes up big at J4 giant slalom races in Steamboat

— It was another big day for Vail skiers on Friday at the J4 Junior Nationals in Steamboat Springs. Ski Club Vail skiers swept the day’s giant slalom championships and took nine of the possible 12 podium spots.

Colby Lange won both giant slalom races on the boys side, and Jennie Symons managed the same for the girls. Vail’s Paula Cooper was second on both runs. Teammate Nellie Rose Talbot was third once while Josie Snyder broke up the Vail monopoly by finishing third on the other run.

Vail’s Brendan Keane was second and Sunlight’s Cooper Cornelius third in one boys run. Cornelius was second and Vail’s Bridger Gile third on the next.

Kristina Steinberg led Steamboat’s skiers, following an eighth-place finish in Thursday’s super-G up with another eighth-place showing in the giant slalom. She was 12th in the other giant slalom race.

Margaret Dickson was 21st and 33rd, Mackenzie Ward 22nd and 23rd, Amber Elliott 52nd and 67th and Delaney Pratt 66th twice.

Sam Frackowiak was 18th once to lead the Steamboat boys. Trey Seymour was 21st and 26th while Chase Seymour was 25th and 27th.

The racing resumes Saturday with a pair of slalom runs at Howelsen Hill in downtown Steamboat Springs.
