— After five years without a varsity program, the Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team returns to the varsity ranks.

Apparently, the team could contend in the Mountain League, as well.

Steamboat beat Durango, 5-3, and Battle Mountain, 6-1, in a pair of scrimmages during the weekend.

“We’re definitely stronger than last year,” coach Betsy Frick said.

The team features 18 players who will play 15 Mountain League games.

Steamboat opens play at 4 p.m. Monday at home against Summit.
