— Steamboat also landed strong Nordic combined finishes at the Junior Nationals competitions earlier in the week. There, Steamboat’s Ben Berend was second Monday in an elimination jumping event.

A day later, Berend teamed with Aleck Gantick, Jake Barker and Fritz Carpenter to win the J2 team ski jumping competition. A team with Nicholas Madden and Jasper Good was tops in the J2 boys team sprint event. Berend and Gantick, meanwhile, teamed up to win the J1 men’s sprint ahead of Jake Barker and Fritz Carpenter.

Koby Vargas, Good, Spencer Petersen and Finn O’Connell were third in another team jumping competition.

“Our kids just killed it at Junior Nationals,” Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club coach Todd Wilson said. “We did really well. It was just a great team, and we had a lot of fun. They put up a lot of good results, and it was a really positive trip.”
