Susan Phillips: Keep Montessori

Susan Phillips

I am writing regarding the March 6, 2012, article “Steamboat upper Montessori program to get 2nd look.” The article does not state the important fact that enrollment in the program only recently has declined because of the difficult transition of adjusting to the loss of its highly trained teacher of eight years just days prior to the start of this school year and the inability to find a fully qualified replacement on such short notice.

Naturally, many parents are hesitant to enroll their children in a program that is experiencing such a difficult transition. As the article states, historically, the program does serve 25 children each year. The current difficulties are only temporary and highly fixable. Instead of unfairly labeling the program a failure and rushing to dismantle it as a perceived ideal solution to a very challenging budget situation, the district diligently should continue to seek alternatives to eliminating this valuable and successful program that has enhanced our community for eight years by offering educational choice that is accessible to all.
