Steamboat Springs The reason remains simple, Linda Danter explains. Cancer doesn’t play favorites.
“Everyone we know has been touched by this horrible disease,” Danter said. “To me it just seems to be an epidemic locally.”
Now in her 13th year as director of Steamboat’s Rally for the Cure golf tournament, Danter has seen the event grow from a vision to one of the top yearly fundraisers.
Last year the tournament raised $26,000 for the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project.
This year’s goal is to exceed that.
“It really is a grass-roots tournament,” said Danter, noting that organizers hope to raise at least $35,000 this year. “Over the years it’s become more apparent that people want more and more of the money raised to stay here.”
Ninety percent of the money raised at the tournament stays in the Yampa Valley, she said.
The money raised for the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project helps with mammograms, chemotherapy and radiation transportation, lunches and anything else patients might need.
This year’s tournament is July 10 at Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club. The cost is $100 per person and includes golf and lunch.
Those not interested in playing golf can attend the lunch for $25, which includes two tickets to a drawing.
The four-person scramble features a double shotgun start. The first groups tee off at 8 a.m. with a second wave starting at 1 p.m.
Danter said more than 80 golfers have signed up. She expects more than 200 to take to the course by the time the event rolls around.
The tournament also features a drawing with more than 300 prizes and a silent auction featuring more than 120 items, from golf lessons to jewelry to gift certificates and gift baskets.
Those interested in playing can call Rollingstone Ranch at 970-879-1391. For more information, call Danter at 970-879-7114.
