Tour Divide mountain bikers trickle into Steamboat
Wednesday, June 20, 2012
Steamboat Springs The Tour Divide mountain bike race continued to rumble on this week, and on Wednesday afternoon, the leading riders entered the final state on their international trail race.
Craig Stappler and Ollie Whalley hit Steamboat Springs earlier this week, then crossed into New Mexico on Wednesday, shoulder to shoulder as they head for the finish line at Antelope Wells, N.M., on the United States-Mexico border.
What has been a slow trickle of riders into Steamboat will turn into a slightly more rapid trickle in the next few days. The field of 106 riders has been pared to 86, with Steamboat’s Erik Lobeck among those who scratched because of an injury. The largest group of those 86 are stretched mostly through Wyoming. About a quarter of the riders had entered or were close to entering Colorado as of Wednesday evening.
In that group is Steamboat’s other rider, Dave Meissner, who crossed into the state Wednesday and bore down on Steamboat Springs in the evening.
