Steamboat Springs The registration deadline for the Steamboat Mad Mudder has been pushed back.
Originally scheduled for Friday, the deadline now is the end of the day Monday.
“We wanted to get in one last weekend for people to register,” said Eli Campbell, the general market manager for NRC Broadcasting, which is helping put on the July 7 race.
The cost to register is $65. The race now has about 500 people registered, and there is no cap.
The race is looking to capitalize on the newfound interest in adventure races. The recent Tough Mudder at Beaver Creek Resort saw some 5,000 people attack the course.
Steamboat’s course begins at the base of Steamboat Ski Area and goes up through the Mavericks Terrain Park in Bashor Bowl before returning to the base.
The 5-kilometer course will feature 10 obstacles, including a tire run, cardboard climb, wall climb, rail balance beams, mud pit, bungee jumble, crawl, log jam, keg hurdle and a fire jump.
“With this one, it’s really nice to have in our own backyard,” said Lee Smith, the promotions director for NRC. “When I did one, I had to go to Denver to do one. This one ... is really cool. It goes through the ski and bike trails, and now it’s going to be a race course.”
The heats begin at 11:30 a.m. Heats through 1:30 p.m. all are full, but Lee said heats are open until 3 p.m.
Heats, with 75 people in each, will go off every 30 minutes.
There will be an afterparty — including vendors, beers and bands — at the base area beginning at 1 p.m. The Rowdy Shadehouse band is scheduled to play, and the party will be open to the public.
