The Steamboat Springs Police Department on Tuesday released security camera video from the armed robbery that occurred at the Shell gas station at Weiss Drive and U.S. Highway 40 just before 10 p.m. Sunday.

The Steamboat Springs Police Department on Tuesday released security camera video from the armed robbery that occurred at the Shell gas station at Weiss Drive and U.S. Highway 40 just before 10 p.m. Sunday.

The video shows the robber walking into the convenience store and getting the attention of the employee who was mopping the floor. The employee then goes behind the counter and empties the cash register.

It appears the robber was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white Steamboat logo on the front.

Detective Dave Kleiber said Tuesday morning that police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the subject. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call 970-879-4345.

Police described the suspect as a white or Hispanic male in his late teens to late 20s, 5-foot-8 to 6 feet tall and skinny. The man hid his face with an orange T-shirt with eye holes cut out of it.

The robber demanded cash and brandished a gun, which originally was thought to be a .22-caliber pistol. Kleiber said Tuesday that he now thinks the gun could have been a pellet gun.

After the robbery, the suspect took off running. Kleiber said he thinks the robber came from the condo developments in the Walton Creek Road area and went back that direction after the robbery.

Police have not disclosed how much money was taken during the robbery.

Kleiber said this is the first armed robbery of a business in Steamboat that he can recall during his 12 years with the department. A Strawberry Park Hot Springs employee was robbed at gunpoint in January 2011 in rural Routt County.
