Steamboat baseball team splits doubleheader

American Legion squad played in Rangely during weekend

— The Steamboat Springs American Legion baseball team split a pair of games in Rangely during the weekend.

Steamboat lost the first game, 5-4, before blowing open the second game and winning, 24-10, in a mercy rule game.

In the first game, Steamboat led 2-0 through three innings thanks to a Matt Regan RBI single and a Ryan Jeep run.

But in the bottom of the fourth, with Regan on the mound, Steamboat struggled defensively. The team gave up five runs, four of which were unearned.

In the top of the seventh, the team mounted a rally. Kobe Bishop’s single knocked in two runs to cut the deficit to 5-4. But Steamboat didn’t get any closer.

“Regan pitched a great game,” Steamboat manager Dave Roy said. “He gave up just five hits.”

In the second game, Steamboat got 13 hits and 11 walks to blow out Rangely. The team scored five in the first inning and 12 in the second to build an insurmountable lead.

Regan had three hits and five runs scored. Billy Clark had two hits and three RBIs, and Michael Yost had a three-run double.

Jesse Pugh, Cutter Pasternak and Jeep all had two hits.

The split leaves Steamboat 3-1 in the early season. The team now is hitting .438 on the season.

It next plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Green River, Wyo., tournament. The team’s next home game is a doubleheader with Palisade on June 23 at Emerald Field. The first game is at 11 a.m.

“The boys just continue to hit the ball,” Roy said. “That batting average is indicative of what these guys are capable of.”
