Steamboat swim team takes 2nd in Rangely

— The Steamboat Springs Swim Team competed at a pair of meets last weekend in Rangely and Thornton.

The team had 27 swimmers compete in Rangely. Led by captain Jack Strotbeck, the team finished in second place out of four teams.

Strotbeck was the second-place high point scorer in the 11/12-year-old division.

Steamboat also got high point wins from Grace O’Reilly (6-year-old division), Jenna Smith (age 8) and Maggie Morton (age 12).

“We were thrilled with the team spirit demonstrated by all the swimmers,” coach Jill Ruppel said.

Steamboat also sent 15 swimmers to a meet in Thornton. Leading the way for the team was veteran swimmer Samantha Terranova. She finished fifth in the 1,500-meter swim. She was also ninth in the 50 back and 10th in the 200 free.

Other top finishers in their group included Avery Harrington, who was ninth in the 50 breast and 10th in the 100 breast. Mickinley McAtee was second in the 200 back, fourth in the 200 free, 100 back and 100 fly and sixth in the 100 breast. Frank Ruppel was third in the 50 back, fourth in the 200 fly and sixth in the 400 free and 50 fly.

The next meet for the Steamboat Springs Swim Team is a preliminary and finals meet Friday to June 17 at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.
