Steamboat cyclists shine in Winter Park

— It was with an eye on next month’s Steamboat Stinger 50-mile mountain bike race that Kelly Boniface traveled Saturday to a race at the Colorado Freeride Festival in Winter Park.

There, she said she got just the tune-up she was looking for, finishing second in the pro/open women’s field of a 25-mile cross-country mountain bike race.

“It was really fun, really fun,” she said. “It was exactly what I was looking for.”

Boniface said she ended up near the front of the pack early in the race and managed to hold her position. She dropped the eventual third place rider and even caught up to the leader, though the stay there was brief. Boniface was dropped herself, but that did little to spoil the day.

“It was a true cross-country course. There was a lot of climbing, but it wasn’t straight up, straight down, and the single track in Winter Park is really fun,” she said.

Steamboat’s Peter Kalmes also raced in the event, finishing sixth among the men.
