Kalmes, Rench secure streaks in Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series

2012 Town Challenge schedule

— Maybe it’s simply the comfort riders build up on other trails. Maybe the locals ride more often on Emerald Mountain’s renowned singletrack than the thrilling trails at Steamboat Ski Area. Or maybe, no matter how familiar, the ski area’s network demands a large toll.

It took that toll again Wednesday. It wasn’t nearly on the same scale as last year’s race — this year’s race came and went without an ambulance call — but the Sunshine Loop Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series event left racers dirty and, in many cases, simply proud to have made it across the finish line.

Indeed, making it across was all even some of the elite riders could accomplish. They streamed down from the highest reaches of Mount Werner with bent and broken bicycles. Several roared along the trails near the base with their obviously damaged gears rattling and creaking like an empty roller coaster train. Others, determined to find a way to salvage the race, pushed their rides, skipping alongside as fast as they could. One man rode on without a chain, and another did so on a flat rear tire.

Despite that chaos, winners emerged, Peter Kalmes and Kate Rench doing still more to secure their domination on their respective divisions.

Kalmes won the men’s side, blasting the course to finish in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 14 seconds. Alex Pond was second at 1:18:11, and Trevor Walz third in 1:18:22. The win continued Kalmes’ perfect run through this summer’s season.

Rench also remained unbeaten as she again was tops among the field’s women, finishing comfortably in first in 1:36:12. Katie Lindquist was second at 1:40:53, and Hannah Williams was third at 1:41:31.

The next event is July 25 on Emerald Mountain.
