Steamboat firefighters quickly extinguish fire on city's west side
Tuesday, July 3, 2012
Steamboat Springs A downed power line sparked a small fire that was quickly extinguished by Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters late Monday night.
The downed power line was in the Copper Ridge area off Elk River Road on the west side of the city. Steamboat Springs Fire Chief Mel Stewart didn’t know what caused the power line to fall, but it might have been the result of a passing storm that brought strong winds to the area.
Stewart said firefighters were quickly on scene and that the fire was contained to the wooden pole itself. Crews from Yampa Valley Electric Association also were called to the scene to repair the damaged line.
“Just like everyone else, we’re kind of hyper-alert to any type of situation right now,” Stewart said Tuesday. “If it sounds like there are any flames involved, we’re really hitting it with everything we’ve got just in case it’s something that has the potential for growth.”
