Hayden, Soroco girls basketball renew rivalry

Luke Graham

— There’s one game people across the Class 2A Western Slope League will pay attention to Friday night, and it’s taking place at Hayden High School.

Combine that with the revelry that goes with rivalry games, and Friday night’s 7 p.m. matchup of the Hayden and Soroco girls basketball teams provides the most intrigue of the winter preps basketball season thus far.

Hayden (8-3 overall, 5-1 in league play) and Soroco (8-3, 4-1) are sitting at the top of the league along with Meeker and Rangely. Friday’s game in Hayden will start to reveal who the top team really is.

“I just always remembered growing up, it was Steamboat Springs and Craig and Hayden and Soroco,” Hayden girls coach Michelle Wilkie said. “It’s a rivalry game. Teams always show up to play.”

Both the Tigers and the Rams have played well of late. They each feature one of the top players in the league — Hayden with forward Erin Koehler, and Soroco with guard Madison George.

The game, however, very well could come down to whether Soroco can handle Hayden’s defensive pressure. In recent years, the Rams have struggled with the Tigers’ full-court press.

“A win would be a huge mental confidence boost for us,” Rams coach David Bruner said. “I know these senior girls haven’t beat (Hayden) since junior high. But these last three games they’ve played have given us more confidence in what we can do.”
