Steamboat Springs Seven weeks ago, Brad Hoefer opened his season in forgettable fashion.
The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle moguls skier broke his collarbone in Winter Park and was cleared to compete for the first time during the past weekend.
What an impression Hoefer made on his way back.
Hoefer won the dual moguls event Sunday at the Vail Valley Freestyle event.
“It was big for him,” coach Mike Amatto said. “He treated it like the start of the year. He never thought about it as coming off an injury; he thought about it as just the start of the season. That mental aspect paid off for him.”
Hoefer’s finish highlighted a strong weekend for Steamboat skiers.
In addition to Hoefer’s finish Sunday, Skyler Kauf was fifth, and George DeGrandis was seventh.
On the girls side in duals, Avital Shimko was fourth, and Jaelin Kauf was fifth.
In Saturday’s open moguls event, Lindsay Mustard was fifth, and Shimko was eighth. DeGrandis led the boys charge in fourth, with Kauf in fifth and Stephen Wilson in 13th.
The next event is a pair of open mogul events Feb. 3 and 4 in Telluride.
