Craig Matt Ray said the Moffat County High School girls basketball team’s game plan heading into Tuesday’s game against Steamboat was to work the ball inside.
The Bulldogs executed that game plan on their home floor against the Yampa Valley rivals.
Moffat County junior Kori Finneman scored 12 points from the post, and senior Annie Sadvar added another 10 as the Bulldogs had no trouble with their Western Slope League opponent in a 55-31 win.
“We knew we could get the ball inside against their zone, and Kori and Annie lit it up,” said Matt Ray, the Bulldogs head coach. “We were also able to hit some big 3-pointers when we needed and everyone just came out ready to play.”
The Bulldogs (11-6 overall, 4-2 WSL) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to start the game and led, 15-5, after the first quarter in large part due to Finneman, who scored 8 points in the opening period.
Steamboat (9-7 overall, 3-3 WSL) trailed, 25-10, at halftime, and Sailors head coach John Ameen said the effort was there but the execution was a little off.
“We played well, but we had about five layups in the first half that we couldn’t close on,” Ameen said. “If we complete those plays, it would have been a different game. It was the little things that hurt us.”
In the second half, the Sailors got their offense going a little better, scoring 12 points in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs offensive attack didn’t slow to allow a comeback.
Steamboat next plays at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Glenwood Springs.
